Poas Volcano National park

Poas Volcano is 23 kms from San Jose Airport on narrow roads that wind through a landscape of the fertile farms and dark forests. There is a paved road right to the top, altough you´ll have to hike in about 1 km to reach the crater.

The Volcano stands 2,708m tall and is located within a national park which preserves not only the volcano but also dense stands of virgin forest. Poas´s craters, said to be the second largest geyser in the world, is more than a mile across.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens, located on the same route to Poas Volcano, is possible to reach when you visit the volcano. In the town of Poasito there is a well marked sign that let you know how to get here.

The main attraction here consists of a series of trails through primary and secondary forest alongside the La Paz Riverm with lookouts over a series of powerful falls, including the namesake La Paz fall.

Sarchi, an artisan town, is easily reached from Santamaría Inn. Taking the number one road to the pacific and for over 35 minutes driving there is a sign letting you know Sarchi town.

The colorfully painted miniature oxcarts that you see all over the country are made here. Oxcarts such as those were once used to haul coffee beans to market. Today, although you might occationally see oxcarts in use, most are purely decorative. However, they remain a well-known symbol of Costa Rica. In addition to minature oxcarts, many carved wooden souvenirs are made here with rare hardwoods from the nation´s forest.
